Thomas tells of living in a world ruled by Rome, a world in which Israel has failed to be a light to the world. God has turned His face away from Israel, yet John the Baptist stirs up the expectation that the long-awaited Messiah is coming to restore Israel. Thomas talks about being one of Jesus’ disciples for over two years and reports on key events like the raising of Lazarus, the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and burial, and his own reaction to this unexpected turn of events.
Three days later the resurrected Jesus appears to the other disciples, but Thomas is absent. Why has he been excluded? Confused and hurt, he angrily demands that Jesus appear before him or he will not believe! Thomas storms out of the house and starts back to Galilee. On the way home, however, Thomas realizes he has made some serious mistakes. In his heart he wants to go back to Jerusalem, but he believes his situation is hopeless. He wants to die, but instead cries himself to sleep.
The next morning a bright morning star testifies to Thomas that there is hope because there is powerful love, a love that existed before evil, before time, before creation (that holds the Universe together). Thomas listens to his heart then describes his return to Jerusalem and his meeting with the transformed, resurrected Jesus. Expecting to be harshly judged, Thomas instead finds grace and forgiveness…the grace and forgiveness available to everyone.
